When God Begins to Move

There are seasons in life when God's direction is unmistakably clear. And then there are seasons where He simply asks us to trust Him one step at a time. I find myself in one of those seasons. Not because I have every answer. Not because I can see the entire road ahead. But because I'm learning once again that following God's will has always required more faith than certainty.
One of the greatest misconceptions about God's guidance is that He always reveals the entire plan before asking us to obey. More often than not, He doesn't. He gives enough light for the next step. Not the next ten.
Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
I find it interesting that Scripture describes God's Word as a lamp to our feet, not a spotlight stretching miles down the road. A lamp provides enough light for the next step. That's how God often leads.
If you're anything like me, you'd probably prefer the spotlight. I'd love to know exactly how every conversation will unfold. How every decision will turn out. What every new season will look like. Where every road eventually leads. But that's not faith. Faith is choosing to obey before every question has been answered. As I've prayed through this season, I've been reminded that the Holy Spirit's guidance is often quieter than we expect.
It's rarely rushed. It's never manipulative. It doesn't produce confusion for the sake of confusion. Instead, He gently aligns our hearts with God's purposes, often confirming His direction through His Word, through wise counsel, through prayer, and through circumstances that only He could orchestrate. Looking back over my life, I can see His fingerprints in places I completely missed at the time. Military assignments I didn't understand. Doors that unexpectedly closed. Opportunities I never anticipated. Relationships God placed in my life. What once felt uncertain now looks remarkably intentional.
That's the beauty of walking with the Lord. We rarely understand His work while we're standing in the middle of it. Perspective usually comes in the rearview mirror. Abraham didn't know where he was going when God called him to leave his homeland. He simply knew who was leading him. "By faith Abraham obeyed... And he went out, not knowing where he was going." (Hebrews 11:8) Abraham's confidence wasn't found in the destination. It was found in the One who gave the direction.
Perhaps that's exactly where some of us are today. Standing between what has been...
...and what God is preparing next. Those seasons can be exciting. They can also be unsettling. They require open hands. They require surrendered hearts. They require the willingness to say, "Lord, wherever You lead, I'll follow."
The older I get, the less concerned I become with writing my own story. I simply want to be found faithful in the story God is writing. I don't know everything the future holds. But I know the One who holds it. And that's enough!
If God is opening a door, I want the courage to walk through it. If He's asking me to wait, I want the patience to remain still. If He's calling me somewhere new, I want my answer to be the same as Isaiah's: "Here am I. Send me." (Isaiah 6:8) Because there is no safer place to be than in the center of God's will. Even when it leads somewhere unexpected.
Reflection Question
Is there an area of your life where you know God is prompting you to trust Him, but you've been waiting for more certainty before taking the next step?
A Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for being faithful in every season of life. Teach me to trust Your direction even when I cannot see the entire path ahead. Give me ears to hear the leading of Your Spirit, wisdom to recognize Your voice, and courage to obey whatever You ask of me. Help me to surrender my plans, my timeline, and my expectations into Your hands. May my greatest desire never be comfort or certainty, but simple obedience to You. Lead me one step at a time, and give me the faith to follow.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
